I first met Tony Kofi in the lobby of Berklee College of Music. His distinct Nottingham accent representing his strength of character, individualism and tenacity: qualities that we now see have contributed to his ascendant career. Tony’s pianist, Trevor is again someone I go back in the day with. Trevor’s unswerving commitment to the tradition will make for engaging and satisfying interaction in this gig.
I’ve always enjoyed updates from bassist Ben Hazleton, one of my regular collaborators, about Tony’s titanic Monk project, with Ben, pianist Jonathan Gee, and drummer Winston Clifford. But it’s amazing to think that this is just one strand of Tony’s musical life.
Another musical situation involving Tony that I really loved was Byron Wallen’s Indigo, with Byron on trumpet, Larry Bartley (bass) and Tom Skinner (drums). This was a fantastically integrated sound and feeling.
The line up will be: Tony Kofi (alto), Trevor Watkis (piano), Larry Bartley (bass), Moses Boyd (drums).
